So it has a higher storage ceiling than a brand new 2015 MBP.īut back to RAM. My 2008 MBP has been upgraded in steps from a 250GB 5400rpm hard drive to a 1TB SSD, and, no doubt, will be able to be upgraded to beyond 1TB of SSD storage in the future. Furthermore, this Apple rep told me that the SSDs in today's MBPs are user replaceable. I visited the local Apple store today to be told that "soldered-in 16GBs of RAM is equal to 32 GBs of non-soldered-in RAM since it is faster"! So the retail arm of Apple is now clueless about RAM reality, or is being deluded by engineering.
To translate that into reality, the only buying option I have for a Mac laptop is to buy one which is already obsolete (or very soon to become obsolete) at a ceiling of 16GBs.
I expect that with normal software bloat, I'll experience more periods of RAM-boundedness) (My 2011 iMac now has 32GBs and only occasionally becomes "RAM-bound", as evidenced by experience of significant slow downs accompanied by significant amount of "Compressed" memory. Nor is it going to happen with today's MBPs now or in the future. Based on the experiences I have with my iMac of 2011 it could do with 32GBs. It's now getting to be difficult to operate at 8GBs, requiring careful app management (quitting less used apps) to avoid slowdowns. Then unofficially, it was upgradable to 6GBs and later to 8 as discovered by OWC or others. I have a Late 2008 MBP which originally came with 2GBs standard, upgradable to 4GB officially.
